What are the three types of customs entries?

The three types of customs entries are:

Formal entries - applies to commercial shipments valued at $2,500 or more. These shipments typically require more documentation and a higher level of scrutiny.

Informal entries - applies to commercial or personal items valued at less than $2,500. These shipments usually have fewer documentation requirements and a quicker clearance process.

Section 321 or de minimis shipments - applies to parcel packages valued below the $800 customs threshold. These shipments are exempt from duties and taxes, allowing for a more straightforward clearance process.

In the process of clearing the shipment, the customs broker prepares the 7501 document which includes details on the cargo, commodity, HS code, and the duties assessed. Please click here for more info.
