How can I import goods into the US if I'm not based there?

Importing goods into the US can be a complex process, especially for non-US based companies. The Customs Border and Protection Agency (CBPA) requires that shipments be approved for companies that have an American Tax ID/EIN (Employer Identification Number).

However, non-US companies can import into the US by establishing their company as a Foreign Importer of Record. To do so, you will need to obtain an EIN, also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number.

Applying for an EIN is a free service offered by the Internal Revenue Service and can be done online. Once you have obtained an EIN, your company will be able to import goods into the US.
