How do I know which origin type to choose?

How do I know which origin type to choose?

If you're new to freight, choosing your origin type might be a bit confusing. That's why we're here to help.

Often, your supplier should be able to recommend which origin type to select.

Your options are:

  • Port/Airport

  • Factory/Warehouse

  • Business address

  • Residential address

If you want the logistics provider to handle your shipment from door to door, as opposed to port to port, you should select either Factory/Warehouse, Business address, or Residential address. But it’s important to let the logistics provider know if they need to provide a liftgate at any of these origin locations, which might add an extra fee. If you choose to have the logistics provider pick up your goods from a residential address, there may also be an added fee.

If you arrange that your supplier or consignor will deliver the goods to the port or airport and your logistics provider will handle the shipment from there, choose the Port/Airport option.

If you’re importing your goods from multiple origins, learn more about your options.

When selecting your origin and booking a shipment it’s also important to understand freight incoterms (International Commercial Terms). Familiarize yourself with them here.
