There are several factors to consider before deciding to ship FCL (full container load) or LCL (less than a container load).
FCL describes cargo loads large enough to fill a 20’ or 40’ shipping container.
A 20’ container is also called a TEU, which stands for a 20-foot equivalent unit.
A 40’ container is also called an FEU, which stands for a 40-foot equivalent unit.
FCL shipments use the entire container. That means the container is loaded and sealed at the factory and unloaded when it reaches the destination warehouse.
LCL shipments share container space with other goods and usually cost more per CBM (cubic meter) than FCL.
LCL shipments are priced according to volume while FCL shipments are charged at a flat rate.
This usually means that once a shipment volume hits around 10 CBM, the benefits of shipping FCL, including faster transit time and lower chances of damage, might be worth the added cost even if the container isn't completely full.
However, this isn't always the case, so we recommend you investigate all possibilities before booking to make sure you're getting the best deal.
